Cory’s ride begins in January 2008 when he developed bone pain following a snowboarding accident. The symptoms did not improve and he eventually underwent a bone marrow biopsy on March 3rd, 2008 diagnosing him with ALL. He began an aggressive course of chemotherapy and achieved his first remission. He underwent a bone marrow transplant in June 2008 with his brother as his donor. Cory recovered quickly and rode 180 miles in the initial Pelotonia bike race in 2009.
The week following another successful 100 mile ride in Pelotonia 10 he developed hip and knee pain. Testing revealed his ALL had returned. He received another round of aggressive chemotherapy achieving remission. He underwent a second bone marrow transplant using cord blood on March 1st, 2011.The recovery was more of a struggle this time. Cory’s will and determination persisted and he rode 50 miles in Pelotonia 11.
In May 2012 he developed bruising and was tiring easily. Testing confirmed his ALL had returned again. He enrolled in a clinical trial and achieved a remission. The drug however came with significant side effects, leading Cory to withdraw from the trial in July 2012. Cory persisted and participated in Pelotonia 12 riding 50 miles.
In January 2013, testing again confirmed that his ALL had returned. While Cory has decided against further aggressive treatment his will and determination persist. He set up a research fund dedicated to finding a cure for ALL in adults and you can donate on CoryLungerFund.org
